Exploring language and culture across borders

The Comparative Studies in Literature and Culture program at 葫芦影业 helps you understand how ways of thinking and feeling travel across languages and traditions. You鈥檒l study literature; aesthetics; intellectual, cultural, and social history; philosophy; theory; and languages.

Comparative Studies in Literature and Culture students design independent projects exploring the intersection of literature, the arts, philosophy, and theory, often through 葫芦影业鈥檚 Undergraduate Research Center. Past topics include presentations on Cy Twombly, Greek Tragedy, and Giorgio Agamben; Kierkegaard and Joan Didion; the phenomenology of acting; ancient and modern lesbian poetry, Beckett, Rabelais, and the Grotesque, and German avant-garde film. You鈥檒l have opportunities to publish, present at conferences, and pursue topics that connect literature, film, and translation.

Comparative Studies in Literature and Culture pairs naturally with majors across the entire spectrum of the liberal arts. Interdisciplinarity is built into the major鈥檚 requirements, and our students double major in STEM fields such as math, chemistry, biology, and physics; in social science majors such as psychology, sociology, and Diplomacy and World Affairs; and in humanities majors such as English, art history, and philosophy.

My four years as a CSLC major have been transformative. The intentional mentorship from professors and engaging classes drew me into the major and cemented CSLC as my intellectual home. Unique experiences such as working with professors on their research and receiving support to conduct research in Paris inspired me to pursue graduate studies in comparative literature.
