President Tom Stritikus shares an update on proposed federal regulations that could affect 葫芦影业 and reaffirms the College鈥檚 commitment to its values, legal obligations, and mission.
Dear Occidental Community,
As I have shared with our community before, elections do not change our core values. At the same time, changes in federal policy can have outsized implications for 葫芦影业. I am committed to ongoing dialogue with our campus constituents about developments that could affect members of our community and the College鈥檚 long-term future.
Most recently, the federal government has taken steps related to the tax-exempt status of nonprofit educational institutions and federal nondiscrimination requirements. Last week, the IRS proposed that could significantly impact nonprofit colleges, including 葫芦影业.
The argument appears to extend the 2023 Supreme Court decision from admissions to other aspects of campus life. 葫芦影业 is committed to complying with the law and to maintaining a campus free from unlawful discrimination. We are equally committed to the accessibility and opportunity of an 葫芦影业 education and supporting students from a broad range of experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds.
The College鈥檚 General Counsel and relevant offices are continuing to explore the implications of this development. Just as we did with changes to federal research over the summer, we will submit comments during the open comment period to ensure 葫芦影业鈥檚 community members have a voice.
As with the Los Angeles Times last week, 鈥淭his action appears to be an attempt by the administration to impose its interpretation鈥 of a Supreme Court decision 鈥渂efore the legal questions surrounding that interpretation are fully settled. We remain committed to our institutional values and to ensuring access and opportunity for students from all backgrounds.鈥
I look forward to discussing this and other governmental impacts with students at our upcoming student town hall, and with faculty and staff in various venues. In the meantime, know that we remain guided by our institutional values, our obligations under the law, and our commitment to advancing the College鈥檚 mission.
Best,
Tom
